Shockwave Therapy
A shockwave is an acoustic wave which can carry high energy to affected painful areas of the body, promoting regeneration and reparative processes of the bones, tendons, and other soft tissues.
In shockwave therapy, radial shockwaves are introduced into the body by means of a freely moved applicator and cover the entire pain region. The pathological association between pain and muscle tone and vascular tone is broken as a result of shockwave therapy and the strong stimuli it produces, enabling natural movement patterns to be remembered and recalled. Shockwave therapy also breaks up calcifications in tendons and adhesions associated with tendonitis and fasciitis. Results are normally rapid and dramatic.
Laser treatment converts light energy into chemical energy, stimulating a healing cascade which facilitates synthesis in the tissue and cell proliferation. This process results in reduced inflammation, swelling, muscles spasm and stiffness, which ultimately leads to tissue repair and a decrease in pain and discomfort.
The High Powered laser raises the game of laser treatment; its higher power achieves greater photonic delivery and shortening treatment times, generating a thermal effect, and improving healing. It can almost immediately arrest soft tissue and joint pain. Its 3 wavelengths allow for optimal tissue absorption and it can achieve greater penetration depth than its low-powered counterparts. This level of high powered laser has been on the market for little over a year and is limited in it’s availability in Australia. We are lucky enough to have a High Powered Laser in the Clinic, and are thrilled at the results it has garnered among our client base – just come in and ask us.
Interferential therapy utilises the effects of low frequency electrical stimulation of nerves without painful and unpleasant side effects. Either two of four electrodes are placed on the skin, with two alternating currents intersecting between the electrodes. This results in a new frequency which has the effect of either stimulating muscle contraction (for weakened muscles, causing the muscle to regain function, strength and endurance) or achieving pain relief (by causing the central nervous system to release endorphins). It also stimulates vasodilation in the blood vessels which results in removal of inflammatory toxins, easing swelling.
Ultrasound therapy is a treatment modality which uses sound waves imperceptible to the human ear to treat pain and promote tissue healing. These sound waves cause microscopic vibrations in deep tissue which encourages healing by increasing metabolism of tissue cells. It can also promote blood flow, reducing swelling and inflammation. Ultrasound therapy is most commonly used to treat soft tissue injuries such as tendonitis, non-acute joint swelling and muscle spasm. Most muscle and ligament injuries can benefit from ultrasound therapy.
Electrostimulation precisely reproduces the processes that occur when our brain orders muscles to contract.
To contract a muscle, the brain sends a command in the form of an electrical signal to the nerve fibres. This signal is then sent to muscle fibres, which causes contraction. In the case of electrostimulation, this occurs directly on the motor nerve using electrical impulses. This can be used to restore nerve function in conditions such as Bell’s Palsy.
As well as causing contraction of muscles, wireless muscle stimulation can provide an analgesic effect. Stimulating tactile sensory nerve fibres can block pain being transmitted to the nervous system, allowing relief from acute or chronic localised pain and muscle pain.
Sometimes with severe back pain the best treatment is electronic traction to reduce pressure in joints of the spine and also compression onto nerves. This is typically painless and in association with taping or a brace it will allow enough freedom for standard physiotherapy treatment to restore function.
